The Environmental Protection Agency released a study Monday concluding that when mixed with oil, chemical dispersants used to break up the crude in the Gulf are no more toxic to aquatic life than oil alone.

Which, if you read between the lines, or have any sense of logic, means they shouldn’t be using the dispersants. This says the dispersants used to break up the oil are no more toxic (not that they are any less toxic) than oil alone. If that is what the study says, then the chemicals are just adding toxicity and making it more difficult to find, and get rid of the oil. Of course, what we don’t know, I haven’t found the study, is whether it actually said that or (more likely) this is just an AP writer’s summary of a study they didn’t really understand. In my experience the papers usually get wrong the details of things like studies and research. In this regard journalists are much more akin to lay people than they are to the scientists and engineers who do these studies.
